I love that you chose to include this post on your blog. I am a huge fan of minimalist living, and the Shakers had it down to an art (literally). I have much respect for a group of people who truly knew what it meant to give up material possessions.

Not only did they make beautiful furniture, but they were an amazing group of people that we could all learn something from.

For some reason, I had assumed that it was all women. Not so. The last four were Arnold Hadd, Wayne Smith, June Carpenter, and Frances Carr. Frances was the elder, but I don’t know if she is the one who died last December.

I do like the chairs for the occasional sit down. Near a door would be nice for putting on boots. And the quilt or afghan look is nice too. :)

I think the problem is being guilty of anything. I prefer to not spend one minute on guilt. So being guilty of not taking care of ones self shows us the problem in its very language. Don’t feel guilty about taking care of yourself. AND, don’t feel guilty about NOT taking care of yourself.

Love the clean lines and simplicity, it seems to show off the beauty of the wood. I didn’t know that history of the Shakers – only three left! Are they all men? I too have to have a comfy chair.

Love the Shaker boxes and the useful Shaker design in tables, the chairs…not so much. They are uncomfortable but sure look great with a quilt draped over them in a corner just for effect. I never knew that the original Shakers were more into adopting rather than procreating…no wonder their numbers are so low.

The chairs make my as.. bottom.. hurt just looking at them :) I do like the storage units though! This was a really great look at something I have always wondered about. I would mess up that minimalistic look with doilies though.
